Responsible Gaming

What we do to keep Nordlys Hall an adults-only room and an evening out rather than a problem, and where to turn if it has already stopped being one.

Our position

The casino at Nordkap Bay is one room in a hotel, on one floor, open for nine hours a day. It exists so that guests can spend part of an evening at a table, learn a game somebody has been meaning to learn for twenty years, or sit at the bar end with a drink and watch other people play. It is not a way to make a living and it is certainly not a way out of a money problem.

Our hosts are trained to notice the moment an evening stops being enjoyable for somebody, and to do something about it rather than look away. We would far rather lose a night of play than have a guest leave this bay worse off than they arrived.

Nothing on this website is a gambling product. You cannot play anything on it, stake anything on it or pay anything into it.

Strictly adults only

  • Admission to Nordlys Hall starts at 18, or at the higher age where local rules set one.
  • Photo identification is checked at the door on every visit, regardless of how old the visitor looks or how often they have been through it before.
  • Accepted documents are a passport, a national identity card or a driving licence. A photograph on a phone is refused.
  • Younger members of a family are welcome everywhere else in the building, but they do not cross the hall threshold, even holding a parent's hand.
  • Where identification is missing, borrowed, damaged or simply unclear, the door team declines entry and does not negotiate about it.

What a casino host can arrange with you

  • A time limit. Say how long you mean to stay and a host will come and find you when the hour is up, wherever you are sitting.
  • A spending ceiling. Fix a figure before the first chip. The floor team holds it for the rest of the night, even if you argue with them later on.
  • A cooling-off period. Ask to be turned away at the door for a week, a month or the rest of the season, and the door team will do precisely that.
  • Self-exclusion. A written, confidential agreement for a fixed term, which we do not cut short on request, however reasonable the request sounds at the time.

Credit is never extended at Nordkap Bay. There is no cash machine on the casino floor, and Saltbaren will not run a bar tab against anything happening in the hall.

Signs worth taking seriously

  • Staying longer, or spending more, than you had decided before you sat down.
  • Going back to the table to win back what has already gone.
  • Playing with money that was meant for rent, bills, travel or somebody else.
  • Borrowing, selling or quietly hiding things so that you can keep going.
  • Feeling restless or short-tempered on the days you are not playing.
  • Keeping the amount or the frequency to yourself when someone asks you directly.
  • Choosing the hall over sleep, over work, or over the people you travelled here with.

If two or three of those have an uncomfortable ring to them, say so to a host or write to one of the organisations below. Nothing a guest says to our staff is written into a guest record.

Independent help

These three services are free, confidential and entirely independent of Nordkap Bay Casino Resort. They are not run by us, they do not report to us, and you do not need to be a guest here to use them.

  • Gambling Therapy — online support groups, moderated forums and live chat in a number of languages: gamblingtherapy.org
  • Gamblers Anonymous — peer meetings in most countries, in person and online, with no fee and no membership list: gamblersanonymous.org
  • Gam-Anon — for the partners, parents, children and friends of someone who gambles: gam-anon.org

Reception also keeps the details of the nearest local helpline at the desk and will hand them over the first time you ask, without a follow-up question.

Staff and training

Everyone who works in Nordlys Hall is briefed on age checking and on how to approach a guest who is having a bad night before they take a first shift on the floor. Refresher sessions run twice a year, in spring and before the winter season. A host who decides to stop serving a guest for the rest of an evening has the full backing of the house and does not have to explain it to a manager first.

Talk to us before you arrive

If you would rather have something in place before you get here — a limit, an exclusion, or just a word with a host so you are not explaining yourself at the door — write to [email protected] and mark it for the casino manager. It will be dealt with quietly and it will not appear on your booking.
